The second edition of Todd's corrected and augmented version of Johnson, with Todd's Royal dedication of the same date, 1827. Three mighty unpaginated quarto volumes in full brown Morocco, raised bands, gilt titling,all edges marbled. Marbled endpapers with original reinforcing strips, coloured and textured to match the covers. Opposite the title-page of volume 1, the classic Reynolds grumpy portrait, engraved by Holl, the plate dated 1814. We were pleased to bandy aphorisms with the Good Doctor during the Arkwright's Society's Georgian weekend just past. He purchased a copy of his own Life of Richard Savage and congratulated ourselves on having survived since 1749 (or was it 1497?), rather more successfully than his father in Lichfield. The leather of this set is scuffed here and there, spines and edges somewhat worn, light "pull-off-shelf" damage to top of spine of volume 1, but all in all a stout, very good set. Expensive to send abroad; but extra post may not be charged within mainland UK.

xiv+42 pages + 102 fine engraved plates; the plates in various monochrome tints and some with tinted backgrounds; the paper even of the text pages bordering on card, top edges gilt. The case is quarter burgundy leather and carmine boards, gilt titling, worn but sound. This volume was produced in the first "perfect binding" era, the pages stuck to a card inner spine (before hollow-backed binding) with gutta percha or similar, inevitably long brittled and perished. So what we have here is a collection of separate leaves (not gatherings) and a sound but worn separate case binding. Such a book can be reassembled but will never open easily, so we have thought it better to leave it as it is; a slipcase might be the answer. the plates are sparing in line and of great artistry, of course.

First two volumes bear postage stamp-sized labels with handwritten catalogue numbers. Acquisition number stamped on FEP of volume 1. Date 1861 (ie date of first edition) appears on all three title pages, but Volume 2 must be post-1882, as the list of other works includes novels of that date. Mrs Henry Wood enjoyed a good relationship with Tauchnitz as her European publisher and in 1871 wrote "Mrs. Norton indirectly accuses Baron Tauchnitz, of Leipsic [sic], of taking our works without acknowledgement; of stealing them, in fact, and of 'not venturing to communicate with pirated authors.' I cannot think where Mrs. Norton's experience can have lain; mine shows me that the Baron honestly and liberally purchases all the works of our authors that are worth it."

The two mighty volumes of the 1839 edition, of which Norfolk, as usual, is by far the mightier. Bindings are olive (or sage green) half Morocco and marbled boards to match. Decorative gilt and titles on spines. The end papers are of matching marbled paper with original (as the edges are covered by the paper) cloth reinforcing strips at the hinges.Top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. The many plates, some folding, are tinted yellow, the frontispieces of each volume being in addition hand-coloured. The books are in very good condition, despite the usual rubbing of the marbled boards and scuffing of the leather. Light foxing, mainly marginal, affects early and late leaves but otherwise the text and the plates are virtually unblemished, Hinges and joints are sound. Unfortunately, the red ink has run over the head of the cricketer making it appear that he has caused himself grave damage. Two previous owners have pasted their book plates inside the front cover. REP is absent. This is the sixteenth edition, revised and enlarged. The preface to the fifteenth edition which appears inside says it has been amended to include the new rules of Association Football, but the section on football is illustrated with a colour plate (one of a number) of a rough-house, rather than the formal game. Clearly it was still difficult to distinguish the sport in the clogging. And there's more! The tissue protector on the frontispiece (a game of leapfrog) has been used to trace the title page image of a yacht.

Fourteen quarto volumes, bound in half brown Morocco and tan buckram. the endpapers are thin card with one-sided sugar-paper finish. The set was given as a gift in March 1926 (ink inscriptions on each first leaf, and several have also the pencilled inscription "Rebound Sept 1925". Blind-embossed raised bands and decorative "cartouches", titles in gilt, publication dates in gilt at foot of spines, ranging from 1778 to 1801. Top edges red-speckled, other edges untrimmed in most volumes. many maps and plates, some folding, some hand-coloured in outline. A very clean, noble and stoutly-bound set, some foxing in particular areas, chiefly, as usual, to early and late leaves and plates. This is a preliminary listing. Detailed collation to follow or on request. Inspection is invited (by appointment, please). Obviously a VERY heavy set, which would cost some £200 or more to send safely outside the UK. An extra charge may also need to be made for inland postage or carriage.
