The Principles and Practice of Obstetricy - Blundell, James (Notes and illus. Thomas Castle)
Price : £190.00
Publisher : London: E Cox
Published : 1834
Edition : 1st Edition
Binding : Hard
Condition : Very Good
Jacket : No Jacket
pp838 + index. Large 8vo. Recently rebound in blue cloth, with new title label to spine ("Obstetricy Blundell 1834"). The full title continues "In Five Parts: I. The anatomy of the female system II The physiology of the female system III The signs and disease of pregnancy IV The art of delivery V The after-management of the puerperal state, the disease of puerperal women, and strictures on the diseases of infants. Edges of pages showing fingering and wear, but interior is clean and bright. Light spotting to title pages and a few small tears to edges. Original half title page, inscribed "Jno Beatson Junr Rotherham October 1834". As Thomas Castle's printed preface is dated March 1834, and allowing for the publisher's lead time, Beatson's inscription means that he acquired this volume almost literally hot off the press. A fascinating addition to the medical library.

The Principles of Diagnosis Second Edition (2 Volumes bound in 1) - Hall, Marshall
Price : £300.00
Publisher : London: Sherwood, Gilbert and Piper
Published : 1834
Edition : 2nd Edition
Binding : Hard
Condition : Very Good
Title page stating "Two Volumes In One", vi, 188 (Vol. 1); xxxii, 426 (Vol 2). Octavo. Quarter bound with new spine, with label (new, lifting at bottom R corner) on spine; and original front and back boards (heavily rubbed about edges). New endpapers. Modern book plate inside front cover. "2 vols in one" written above "Vol I." on title page of volume one (difficult to date from script, appears to be pencil). Eccentrically bound pages in Volume 2, but appears to be complete. Relating to volume 2: p22 bound at back though should after p20; 370 and verso 370 should be after 369 but bound at back; 423, 424,426,425, 420, 419, 422,421 all present but bound in wrong order. Some foxing to first and last pages, and pages irregularly cut as common in works of this period, but interior overall is clean, VG. An opportunity to obtain this rare and significant work at a reasonable price. Marshall Hall was born in Nottinghamshire and did some of his most important work at Nottingham General Hospital. He died in Brighton in 1857; it is unclear if he was related to the barrister Edward Marshall Hall who was born in that town in 1858, perhaps as a grandfather.

The whole bound in grey-green cloth, black titling and a colour fowl plate affixed to the front board. The colour plates are all from paintings by "Wippell". In short a lovingly produced volume! This is a very good copy apart from a yellowed fade strip down the front board edge and grubby top edges. We have many, many more recent and much more reasonably priced poultry books from the collection of a learned bachelor farmer, but you would have to make an appointment to look at these, we just haven't time to catalogue or search out inexpensive items, David Mitchell 01629-823272

An attractive navy-blue volume, with gilt decoration and titling to spine and front board and blind-embossed decorative surrounds to both boards; very characteristic of its day - short and plump (170X110 mm). x+358+8pp publisher's adverts. The book begins with frontispiece and illustrated title-page separated by a tissue guard. These look to have been lithographically printed after steel engravings, but perhaps I'm just ignorant. The spine is a little dulled and the sections now sit with the fore-edges unevenly projecting, but the book is sound and in almost very good condition. An uncommon survival.

The Thrilling Mysteries of a Convent Revealed! and The Nun; or, Six Months Residence in a Convent - Anon. and Rebecca Theresa Reed
Price : £20.00
Publisher : Philadelphia: T B Peterson
Edition : 1st Edition
Binding : Hard
Condition : Very Good
pp238. Green cloth binding with gilt lettering to front and spine. Octavo. Continuous pagination but actually consists of The Thrilling Mysteries of a Convent Revealed! with no author given, but Peterson was the publisher, 191 pages AND The Nun; or, Six Months Residence in a Convent by Rebecca Theresa Reed (also published by Peterson). Frontispiece. Endpapers browning. PO name scratched from inside front cover but date of 1884 has been left. Appears to be neither anti-clerical pornography, nor anti-Catholic propaganda (despite the earlier work of the US Know-Nothing Party. Though this had presumably left an interest in Catholic power in the USA). The "mystery" of the first work involves the head of the Jesuit Order in the USA.

The Wonders of the Peake (Peak) - Cotton, Charles
Price : £1100.00
Publisher : London: Printed by J Wallis for Joanna Brome
Published : 1683
Edition : 2nd Edition
Binding : Hard
Condition : Very Good
Title page, dedicatory page, pp86. Octavo. Quarter calf with marbled board covers (marbling worn about corners). "Cotton's Wonders of the Peak. 1683" in gilt lettering on the spine. New cream endpapers. Title page and dedicatory page show signs of repair about edges. Glue from earlier repair LH of title page obscuring the "C" of Charles. Some staining to edges of pages where book has been held. Comprises six signatures (identified A - F) at bottom of page. Run-on word appears bottom RH corner of each page if the stanza continues overleaf. A blank line appears between each stanza. This is the second edition, coming from the same publisher two years after the first and four years before Cotton's death. The dedicatee is Elizabeth, Duchess of Devonshire. Written in heroic couplets, Cotton's was one of the first landscape poems of a movement which only became significant under Queen Anne, though Cotton was more of a satirist than his successors. His wonders are Pool's Hole (Page 5), St Anne's Well Buxton (page 20), Tydeswell (page 24), Elden-Hole (page 30), Mamtor (page 41), Peake's-Arse (page 47), and Chatsworth (page 72). The early pages discuss Mary Queen of Scots' stay in the Peak before her unhappy transfer to Fotheringhay, and a contemporary note in neat script appears on page 16. Cotton's printed footnotes occur through the work, including a reference to "Mr Hobbs", ie Thomas Hobbes who had written De Mirabilibus Pecci on his Derbyshire retreat.

A remarkable record of "anglo-chinese" school life; more than 200 pages large-format paperback in English, with students' names in English and Chinese,an Old Boy section, many black and white illustrations of activities, teams etc., many advertisements and finally the text repeated in Chinese characters. this copy has been knocked at the foot of the spine causing 5cm.tears, which could easily be repaired, otherwise, the contents are in very good condition and the colour cover is worn round the edges and a little more yellow than intended, otherwise sound.A fascinating survival of an epoch from which I too survive.
