The first facsimile edition. Pages near fine, most sections still uncut, though the richly toned printer's ink has resulted in much ghostly "set-off" - I presume all copies are the same. Endpapers foxed. The binding is (greetings to Barry Mackay and others} in my opinion ART-vellum, a narrow one and a half inch long triangle of which has been torn off at the head of the spine, showing cream card beneath. Blind-patterned boards in VG condition, spine somewhat worn. Overall a VG copy of this spectacular eccentricity.

Title plate in centre of front cover (original price one guinea). 12 plates show the position of the constellations in each month of the year, with a thirteenth plate before them being a diagrammatic representation of the Egyptian, Ptolemaic and Tychonian (ie Copernican) systems. The frontispiece is the first moveable plate, allowing the Earth on one hand to be rotated about the central sun, showing the constellations ("sun signs") behind them, while on a second rotating arm, the procession of Venus and Mars (in a fixed position to each other) can be simulated. The second and third plates show a disk representating the celestial disk at different times to be rotated against a rational horizon. There is a tear in the card representing the "rational horizon" in the last case. Overall the condition of the moveable plates is better than VG. The still plates have stains about the edges. Although Johan Bode had introduced the idea of monthly star charts in the 1760s, it was this work of Rubie's that first popularised the idea: Rubie writing this book as a guide for interested amateurs. Note that Rubie's use of the constellations must be distinguished from R H Naylor's use of "sun signs" when he began his astrological column in the Daily Express a century later, on August 24th, 1930. Rubie's text explains the real and apparent motion of the heavens, and explains how their motion can be calculated and foretold. PO stamp dated 1899 on FEP.

One of the most sumptuous of 1970's facsimile reprints. An elephantine folio, bound in Morocco'd drak green cloth, with large antiqued facsimile title on paper. Within, all leaves are mounted on linen hinges in the proper Atlas style, each leaf being printed on the one, opening side only. The first leaf is a double page illustrated title, the second and third leaves carry extensive introductory notes by J.B.Harley and J.C. Harvey, the remianing twenty leaves carry the map, which includes larger scale plans of several towns and cities. This copy has resided in a converted High Peak farmhouse and this has assisted light foxing of endpapers and bottom page edges, with a small thinned bottom corner to the rear free endpaper. There is a half-inch tear in the top edge of the first leaf, which appears as a tiny, diminshing bump in the second and third leaves.The front board is slightly warped, the back board shows two minor bottom-edge bumps. I am trying to describe all faults in what is otherwise a fine copy.

The back cover bears an apparent letter, 13 lines of script beginning "My dear friends". Internally, no endpapers, hinges worn between cover and title page; staining about edges of title page and inside cover edges. Small inscription inside front cover dated 1825. Stamp on bottom of title page of "Greve Scheel". Text block tight bound, pages yellowing, but otherwise VG. Condition overall G-VG. p. 91 is misnumbered 61. p. 106 is misnumbered 06. Some pages bear contemporary neat annotations (eg p.40, 32 and 86). Each annotation bears a date, indicating the effective date of a change in the law. A desirable copy of a rare work. Photographs can be supplied on request. As the Danish settlements in America were three islands in the Caribbean principally used as refuges for pirates, it is easy to understand that no second edition of this work was called for.

I shall copy lots before parting with this to whoever will be able to make better use of it AND come up with the preposterous asking price. The spirit of this booklet survived at least into the 60's in printed form and on the telly in the form of Monty Python etc. Condition rather worn, but as good as can be expected, and acceptable.
