We have an unusual set of 13 Tauchnitz "Collection of British Authors", bound in scrumptious half vellum and cloth, red title labels by Charles Day, 26 Mount Street, London W. for "Fletcher Wastell Hungerford Littledale", or some part of those names, the rest a place and Wastell COULD just be Gastell; all of those names seem to have intermarried.The boards of some volumes are variously heat-warped; the condition is otherwise very good. The titles are by Doyle, Wells, Hornung, Hungerford, Jacobs, Pemberton, Miss Grant. We shall clean gently with milk.The dates are 1897-1900 ish ;all are Tauchnitz firsts; several are the same year,and one the year before,the English first edition.

The date is a guess, plus or minus 5 or so years. (vi)+58 pages, bound in slightly flexible Morrocco-covered boards, with titling in gilt and a blind-embossed art-nouveau-ish tree-like pattern. Some darkening of spine and a tiny triangle of (burnt-off" material at spine corner of back board. Otherwise a fragile but well-preserved Edwardian gift for or from a lady. Indeed the FEP is inscribed "To my Valentine". The whole is approx 4 by 2 and a half inches in size, a semi-miniature book. (What a lot of modifications in this description). Apparently a rare survival. It will cost almost nothing to post, but please allow us the perk this once. Think of the labour (labor)!

Volume 1 bears inscription to Reginald Currey from Granny Xmas 1894, while Volume 2 bears inscription dated 24 August 1895 and signatures of eight members of the Currey family, including Percy Heylyn Currey (1864 -1942), who would become the most prominent Arts-And-Crafts architect in Derbyshire. Endpapers yellowing. 46 songs in Volume 1 including Loch Lomond, A Lyke Wake Dirge, Skye Boat Song, The Twa Corbies and Sound the Pirbroch. Volume 2 includes 50 songs including Jingling Johnnie, Sir Patrick Spens, Aiken Drum and The Flowers of the Forest. Frontispiece in each volume: Volume 1's is labelled Proud Maizie, and must have been drawn from life: she is stunning (and as a model should have signed a release if her image was to have been labelled with that song title).

The collected, die samtliche, 199 Kirchenkantaten bound 1-9 in Vol 1 then 10 to each of 19 further volumes. I was told that the paperback cantatas had been purchased over a number of years during the 60's in Oxford and bound up by Blackwell's.The binding is excellent black Oxford Library Buckram (or similar), with headbands and handsome gilt titling on the spines. The front cover of each Kantate is included, and also the back cover of the last to be placed in each volume, which acts as an index of the contents of all 199.A beautiful set in fine condition, opening flat for the music stand, which, being a choral singer, I have kept for some years but have not used and now have no room for! The last item of the liturgy was the singing of the School Song, "The Love of Comrades" - would this have been echoing in the old boys' ears 30 months later as they fell under the monstrous fire of the Hunnish machine guns? We may never know.
