A massive volume encompassing many choral anthems, presented uly 28th. 1876 to Miss Pilling, Principal Soprano ny the Organist, Clergy and Churchwardens of Halifax Parish Church ( to quote from dedicatory label within front cover. The binding is a classic sumptuous 1870's red scived Morrocco job with ornate gilt panels to spine and both boards, which are very heavy but not bevelled. All edges gilt and GOFFERED! 10 by 14 by 2.2 inches. Usual peeling and rubbibg and splitting beginning with such bindings and alas the title leaf is missing. First leaf now first anthem. Is there a home for this in Halifax, and have I remembered that term aright?

Tucked in is a programme of Maude's appearance at Balmoral Castle (presumably before Their Majesties Edward and Alexandra)in "The Headmaster". This memoir was not written posthumously but to introduce him to an American audience. Maude has his own London theatre, The Playhouse, dedicated to comedy. But as Charing Cross station once fell on top of his home one wonders how he kept up his smile.

There are 5 chromolithographs of groups of animals - the poultry proud, the rest "sweet". Bound with yellow endpapers in heavily decoratively blind-embossed red cloth, with gilt rabbits on front board, ornate gilt titling and animals on the spine;all edges gilt. Ticket of W. Greening, Binder 183, Fleet Street on back pastedown, faded signature on front free endpaper.The spine is a bit darkened with one very short pull-off-the-shelf split at the top, but this is a very good copy; considering its age it feels almost "fine"; few comparable copies can have survived.

We've never seen this before either, though we've had her other books. 32pp pocket-book-sized, in stiff card covers, with wrap-overs in the slim-volume style. Cover and contents illustrated with modernist cartoons by the author. A VG- though faded copy. An excerpt: "Clamouring 'quite!' as a chorus, The quorum records its vote, And the Chairman's smile and his store of guile Have preserved an agreeable note, Quite! quite! And a paying idea's afloat." Actually, John Gloag as a bit of a polymath - he wrote detective stories; he published a Penguin Special "What about Business?" during WW2; and he was an expert on English furniture. The title, of course, is a parody of Kipling, (that last line echoes Kipling's "And a rogue is married to a whore")
