Near-contemporary inscription: 'Belongs to the Mo. Meeting at Nottingham No.1/No.2'to fly leaf of both volumes. Bindings are in very good condition, with some wear and rubbing, and are well suited for the secure handling of such large books. Leaf A1 (pp.1,2) is torn across the middle, with slight loss of the odd letter and ancient repair at the margin with stamp-edging and more modern stabilisation with archival tape. Leaf A12 also torn and invisibly repaired.Pages browned round edges and "Patty Smith" written at top of title page in faded 18th,.C. hand, otherwise a very good copy, so shall call it "good".

Plate opposite p205 and opposite p145 (each two illustrations). Double plate opp. p615. Block printed capitals. Dutch language. If my understanding is correct this is volume 1, covering up to 1585 when this Montenegrin became Pope Sixtus V, is the third printing, and Leti's translation of William Sewel's Italian original. As a Cardinal Sixtus was investigating other Catholics for heresy, before going onto excommunicate Henry of Navarre and renew that of Elizabeth I; fortunately, perhaps, for European politics he did not like the Catholic monarchs much more. While he rebuilt much of Rome it was at the cost of the many antique structures which were razed for their stone.

Total probably about 250 pages. Tipped in note on effect of the 1916 Daylight Saving Act (ie all the lighting up times are out by one hour). Some very light browning to some page edges. No sign that this is a facimile, this does not appear to be 90 years old. No writing found on any page.
