A very good copy of the Tauchnitz edition in the same year as the Smith Elder British and the Harper American first editions. Two volumes bound in cream vellum with gilt titling and decoration in gilt, red and blue, including gilt decorated blue Morocco label-like panels at head and foot of boards and spine. Covers somewhat darkened and rubbed here and there; a damp-edge mark on one spine - would probably clean up with care, but still charismatic, strong, sound binding with gilt and grey-green printed foliate design on the endpapers. All edges red-dyed.The feature of this "de-luxe" edition is some 50 contemporary photographs each mounted on card, mostly of historic scenes in Florence (Firenze). These are numbered and must be from the stock of a photographer working for the tourist market. A nice item.

Three volumes. 12vo. pp342, 330, 323. Quarter bound calf with red cloth boards, edges of spine heavily rubbed, so that condition overall is only G-VG. First two volumes bear postage stamp-sized labels with handwritten catalogue numbers. Acquisition number stamped on FEP of volume 1. Date 1861 (ie date of first edition) appears on all three title pages, but Volume 2 must be post-1882, as the list of other works includes novels of that date. Mrs Henry Wood enjoyed a good relationship with Tauchnitz as her European publisher and in 1871 wrote "Mrs. Norton indirectly accuses Baron Tauchnitz, of Leipsic [sic], of taking our works without acknowledgement; of stealing them, in fact, and of 'not venturing to communicate with pirated authors.' I cannot think where Mrs. Norton's experience can have lain; mine shows me that the Baron honestly and liberally purchases all the works of our authors that are worth it."
