Lady's Pictorial: A Newspaper for the Home: 1885: Volume X July - December, with bound-in Autumn Fashion Supplement - [None]
Price : £120.00
Published : 1885
Edition : 1st Edition
Binding : Hard
Condition : Very Good
Elephant folio. Yellow cloth binding with gilt lettering and black borders to front and spine. Ends of spine worn. Front endpaper creased. From Vol X, No 227 Saturday July 4 1885 to No 252 Saturday, December 26 1885, followed by 12 page fashion supplement, each with four photographs to a page. Covers fashion, household, gossip and celebrity. The first issue deals with the forthcoming Royal marriage of Princess Beatrice, however a more interesting note is this one: "PRINCE ALBERT VICTOR - or, as I much prefer to call him, Prince Edward - is now a Freeman of the City of London, and go into business there at once if the worst comes to the worst. He has a long line of precedents to fall back upon as, during the past few generations almost all the Princes of the Blood Royal have been enrolled among the City Fathers. Curious thins are done in these ultra-Radical days, and it would be strange, if interesting, to see the young Prince set up as a fishmonger, a draper, or a cordwainer in real good earnest." Of course, and allegedly, Prince Albert Victor did take up a similar activity, and keep up the blood connection, as under his title of Duke of Clarence he appears in the list of suspects to be Jack the Ripper! How perspicacious of this writer three years before the event. What else could one discover? We leave that to you. Please check postage due to weight.

8vo sized hardback (blue cloth binding with white lettering) - ie a small desk diary - for 1917; a week to two pages. Between each week is an interleaving notes page. The last part of the diary is a memorandum and accounts book. Begins with ready reckoners etc, and includes a history and account of the Boots company with BW photographs (including Sir Jesse Boot, not as unattractive as his nemesis D H Lawrence made him out to be). Total probably about 250 pages. Tipped in note on effect of the 1916 Daylight Saving Act (ie all the lighting up times are out by one hour). Some very light browning to some page edges. No sign that this is a facimile, this does not appear to be 90 years old. No writing found on any page.

Meet Your County Council: The West Riding of Yorkshire - [None]
Price : £15.00
Publisher : London: Bureau of Current Affairs
Published : 1948
Edition : 1st Edition
Binding : Soft
Condition : Very Good
pp80. Quarto. Printed card cover. An account of the council's functions, with photographs, diagrams etc. Fascinating in every way - most horrifying statistic, perhaps: 73 people died from syphilis in the West Riding in 1947, and the accompanying figures can be broken down to show that between 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 cases were fatal. No wonder the following year's NHS was welcomed.

Slightly more yellowed top half of page 1 as the folds made this the "cover" for the last four decades.

Times of India Illustrated Weekly newspaper; three copies from 1907 and 1908 - [None]
Price : £25.00
Publisher : Times of India
Published : 1907
Binding : Soft
Condition : Poor
Three copies of this fascinating weekly, issued each Wednesday, tattered with slight loss at hinges or where the odd corner has been torn off but subsantially preserved. each copy should consist of a 36 page illustrated newspaper with advertisements plus, in the centre, an additional four-page supplement of captioned half-tones printed on a coated paper. The whole was finally "wrapped" in a four-page advertising section on a "yellow" paper. The copy of September 16th. 1908 (VollXXIX, No.38) is complete (apart from above-mentioned damage). The copy of October 16th. 1907 lacks the front leaf of the advertsing section. The copy of July 8th. 1908 lacks all the advertsing wrap-round.We include a few pages of a fourth issue, with centre supplement, to make up this "lot". Despite the damage, there is a wealth of information and characteristic illustrations of the Raj at its zenith - reviews and photographs of regiments and the police, polo, weddings, events at Poona - so it really was like that! a rare survival; all this must have been posted to the preserving household climate of Derbyshire (one stamp and address survive).
