Price : £30.00
Publisher : Nottingham: C.N.Wright
Published : 1888
Binding : Hard
Condition : Good
A robust volume, being the separately bound book covering just the parishes mentioned in the title, being pages 457 to 658 of the encompassing work which also includes the "Municipal and Parliamentary Borough" of Nottingham. Asdverts begin on page 643 and there are also pages nubbered to xvi at the outsel, being more adverts and some lists of gentry etc, - however, page ii appears to be the pastedown; the rear pastedown is also an advert page. I don not think a leaf is missing at the beginning, but rather that the numbering is eccentric. It can be seen, however that a folding map has been torn out opposite page xvi. Bound in navy blue cloth with blind embossing, the publisher's gilt trade mark on the front cover and "Nottingam District Directory" in gilt onb the spine. Somewhat darkened front cover, with a few marks. Small tear from margin of the first and second leaves with some advertising text lost. Priced to take account of faults; a mine of information with fascinating adverts, some pictorial. Date not checked, but looks about right,

Price : £50.00
Publisher : Pym Yeatman, 15 Greenhill Road, Harlesden, N.W.

Binding : Hard
Condition : Very Good
This comprises an extract from "the forthcoming 10th Section of the Feudal History of Derbyshire", but contains also a long and curious Petition submitted to the "High Court of Justice Chancery Division Mr. Justice Kekewich". It concerns a boycott which destroyed the author's practice as a barrister, and also the irregular scrapping and then sale for large sums at auction of documents from the Public Record Office. (It's so difficult to resist the temptation to fish good things out of the skip, isn't it, even if you were yourself instrumental in their being there.) This book was issued by the author in blue paper wraps, without a title page. This copy is quarter skived deep Burgundy morocco-textured leather and cloth covered boards, like the usual "Feudal History" binding and is inscribed by Pym Yeatman to Mr. and Mrs. Moss, BUT contains the armorial bookplate of Evelyn Dawsonne Heathcote, BUT is stamped in gilt on the front board S.J.D. - perhaps a Drury. Within, loose a MS letter to "Dear Madame" concerning the Wakelyn family.

Secret History of "The International" Working men's Association - Yorke, Onslow
Price : £38.00

Published : 1921
Edition : 1st Edition
Binding : Soft
Condition : Very Good

Very clean and tight copy. (iv)+ 72pp. T.G.-H. informs me of the following background to this title: Apparently Onslow Yorke is a pseudonym for William Hepworth Dixon, He seems to be well-known for a number of books on the British penal system, a book on America, the Tower of London and Spiritual Wives, which is referenced as being on free love (which would tie in with his interest in the International Workingmen's Foundation and Marx's part in its foundations.) Dixon apparently was quite the world-traveller and in a biography he is placed as being in Switzerland at that historic meeting when the International was founded. So far the only copies of my book I have found are listed in the British Library, which I presume makes it very rare. You might be interested to know that in his description of a ship bearing the founding members of the International setting off from Geneva to the other side of the lake (France), as the ship left shore they ran up the red flag of revolution. The description is on pages 67 & 68 of my edition. It was the red flag without the Swiss cross and I think represents perhaps the first use of this international symbol of reveolution. It is a stirring description, including the reaction of the horrified bourgoisie.

Very rare early 19th century three-decker novel. 12mo. Only 750 copies printed. In the original publisher's boards, with paper label to spine. The books have been restored, text-blocks re-sown, and new endpapers added. Two-thirds of the paper to the rear board of volume III is missing, and all the original labels are worn and chipped. Cloth to the front joint of volume I repaired. Half-title present in all 3 volumes. Internally there is some age-toning to paper, and the occasional foxing and marking, but overall pretty clean. xvi, 333, [2]; 412; 376 pages. Please enquire for any photos. "The scene, as the title imports, is laid in Derbyshire, and the time is the age of England’s glory,—the reign of our maiden queen. The hero, Edward Stanley, is of the rabid species." (from the Monthly Review, 2nd ser. 102 (Oct 1823): 210–12)

An Album of Photographs of Malta and Port Said, 1913 - [None]
Price : £60.00
Publisher : Kodak binding
Edition : F
Binding : Hard
A beautifully presented record of a Mediterranean voyage, towards the Suez Canal, "Sailed from Tilbury, May 3rd. 1913" on board the P&O ship S.S. Sardinia. The album contains 48 60X104 mm. photographs, sepia, + 1 loose. Many are shortly and stylishly captioned in white on the dark mounting card, notably "As soon as these women saw my Kodak they turned away at once & I had to hide behind Mother's sunshade to get these two photographs." The photographer was probably Evelyn Dawes or Ferguson perhaps of Wokingham (Family memories can be short, particularly when you finish up as an aunt.) One caption is "Battle Ships at Malta During the War" - which war?? The Malta pictures are somewhat foggy but show for instance the Boom and various warships and harbour scenes. There are some excellent street scenes in Port Said. The binding is a Kodak Series H. Album, half dark green leather, gilt titled and ruled and grey-green buckram; very handsome.

Tall quarto report, x + 962 pages + folding maps (coloured), diagrams, plans and one lithograph of vernacular buildings. Fascinating throughout, this amazing volume includes historical, scientific, agricultural and regional overviews, much verbatim evidence from witnesses: named farmers, professionals and landowners, and the extended conclusions of the commissioners. It seems all to be in English. Very tempted to keep this rare human document, but I'm not welsh. The binding is half navy Morrocco ( no doubt scived and stamped calf) and blue buckram, gilt titling. Signature of John Jenkins, Llandeilo on FEP.Some scuffing to head, tail and corners otherwise in very good condition.

An attractive, sturdy and eminently usable set of 24 books plus an index book, privately uniformly bound in red buckram with the volume numbers and years gilt on the spines. Usually three (sometimes two or four) consecutive years are bound in each book, so the 69 volumes spanning 71 years (there are occasional eccentricities in volumation of the years) have made 24 handsome books. In addition there is a uniform index volume, containing the Society's slim index for the years 1879-1952 and Strutt's much much fuller index to the earlier first 25 volumes. I've kept these for years thinking I would refer to them but scarcely ever have, perhaps because I could house them only "in the roof", so am now being realistic. Despite the roof they are in fine condition.

This run of annual Anniversary Festival "song booklets" alas lacks the issues for 1960,1976, 1978 and 1981, so there are 22 booklets in all, small, saddlestitched, typically 40 pages mainly of unison chants and polyphonic settings - but then if you are interested you know what's in them -I'm merely a humble Bass having to sing Tenor most of the time. Also the programme of an Evensong at Arundel in 1992 - would sound great in that towering French-like fragment, but maybe St.Nicholas is the mediaeval church. Price reflects extra postal cost of this heavy bundle.

The text block is in very good condition (apart from one loose double-page plate), but the regular ornate cloth case, black and gilt decorations on a crimson cloth is badly damp stained, though still firmply attached at the hinges. I have not checked for every plate, but the edges are so regular that there appears to have been no meddling. The previous owners, at least, assure me that they removed nothing, despite being advised to e-bay plates one by one! We might need to charge extra within the UK and certainly so outside.
