The first facsimile edition. Pages near fine, most sections still uncut, though the richly toned printer's ink has resulted in much ghostly "set-off" - I presume all copies are the same. Endpapers foxed. The binding is (greetings to Barry Mackay and others} in my opinion ART-vellum, a narrow one and a half inch long triangle of which has been torn off at the head of the spine, showing cream card beneath. Blind-patterned boards in VG condition, spine somewhat worn. Overall a VG copy of this spectacular eccentricity.

Near-contemporary inscription: 'Belongs to the Mo. Meeting at Nottingham No.1/No.2'to fly leaf of both volumes. Bindings are in very good condition, with some wear and rubbing, and are well suited for the secure handling of such large books. Internally the pages are age-toned but clean, and the bindings are tight. lv, 767; 638,[10] pages. Some 60 leaves,nine and a half by seven inches, printed on one side only, in black and red, with photographs as photogravures, floral endpapers and dark green cloth binding with decorative panel and lettering on the front.The contents comprise: Title page, map showing branch location (still confined to the North Midlands, South Yorkshire and East Anglia), a five page history of the company,then some 45 photogravures (or other type of lithographs)of the branches - some showing shop fronts, some the interiors and fittings. These are grouped into seven "sub-regions", for each of which there is a one page introduction describing the towns and Boots' arrival in the district.The book concludes with a 6 page list of the towns in which Boots are established, with an entertaining and provoactive description of each - for instance, Norwich "clings to old-time ways and methods", Mansfield is "wealthy and progressive", Kettering "thinks there is nothing like leather", Doncaster "An important Center of the Great Northern Railway, which is said to end in a field a few miles outside the town." This copy is in very good condition apart from the parting of the endpapers, rendering the linen hinges visible and strained. The fore-runner of numerous, but usually smaller-format, books about chain shop branches, often published by the Cooperative Societies.

This copy was presented in 1976 to Kay Herod and bears the signatures of some 40 members of Cambridge Svalbard Exploration teams between 1949 and 1976. Some are signed directly, others cut from letters and the whole makes a "two-page spread" over the front endpapers, covered with coverlon to preserve the attached pieces of paper or card. Maybe you are in there, maybe I should have done Geology. Something ( a photograph?) has vanished from a brown-paper envelope stuck in at the back of the book.

Kegan Paul's account of his religious belief and ultimate acceptance into Roman Catholicism. A previous reader has made one or two pencilled lines beside passages (eg page 17) but not many. Paul makes specific comparisons with others of the time, e.g. Gosse father and son, and Mrs Sherwood, authoress of Orwell's hated Fairchild Family. Unwittingly he also shows how different readers come to different understandings, when he ends with the line "I was blind, now I see", which most readers today will associate with the evangelical writer John Newton, through its use in his hymn "Amazing Grace".

Full suede binding with marbled endpapers and ticket of W.Hoon, Stationer, Ashborne; recently expertly rebacked with original boards and spine relaid onto new suede, linen hinges inside, tucked under the endpapers. Handles well and good for another century or two of use.
