pp912. 8vo. Illustrated cloth covers show a young cricketer making a strike and a couple skating in red, gold and black. Lacrosse sticks and a horseman appear on the spine. Unfortunately, the red ink has run over the head of the cricketer making it appear that he has caused himself grave damage. Two previous owners have pasted their book plates inside the front cover. REP is absent. This is the sixteenth edition, revised and enlarged. The preface to the fifteenth edition which appears inside says it has been amended to include the new rules of Association Football, but the section on football is illustrated with a colour plate (one of a number) of a rough-house, rather than the formal game. Clearly it was still difficult to distinguish the sport in the clogging. And there's more! The tissue protector on the frontispiece (a game of leapfrog) has been used to trace the title page image of a yacht.

The text volumes in full polished "grained" calf, boards edged with triple gilt panel, spines decorated in panels, red morocco title and volume number labels. The atlas volume in half calf and marbled boards, spine decoration uniform with the text volumes. Each volume is bound with blue "grained" card endpapers and extra free paper endpapers. All the above clearly an approximately contemporary French binding.All plates present, that is 32 plates as 33 (initial plate 1 map on two sheets), including several folding maps; some 5 tissue guards missing. Pagination of the text volumes as called for, that is including half-title and title leaves and errata leaf (volume1) and errata on verso of last page (volume 2). A set of great character and, despite some rubbing of bindings and some finger-marking of plate corners, must be described as in very good and completely original condition. First English text edition 1948. Very good/good. Rotterdam:TGTE is a folio sized volume in a green cloth binding with gilt decoration and lettering to spine. It has an illustrated DW, now in a plastic wrap (the top edge of DW is creased with some small tears). There are some reproductions of historical blockcuts, maps, and (by my count) 24 black and white plates. Plates seem to have either one or (mainly) two photographs on each side. A few photographs are historical but most show the docks as they are (in 1948) being reconstructed and extended. (The Europort idea was clearly being developed only three years after the war). I guess the book (all text in English, pages 259) was produced as a sales item, to sell the new port to the world's shipping lines. But it is much more than a catalogue. Please check postage due to size.
