Handling these early Hakluyt volumes reminds me of teenage excitement when (rarely) coming upon beautifully engraved stamps of similar period. I could go on too long. This volume is near-fine apart from the normal page-edge and endpaper foxing, and its spine, which is dulled and marginally frayed at the top (and slightly at bottom). In need of a more graceful home than this.

A handsome slim volume, bound in quarter dark-brown textured cloth and black leather, simply gilt lettered and decorated on the (leather) spine. The contents begin with a single pink sheet being a title page referring to the North Midland course of 1884-5,with the "Revised Programme for Derby and Chesterfield" on the back. Following this is the 32 page course, plus one folding table,every leaf interleaved with one or two blanks, on which are copious neat pencilled notes.Following this are the 86 pages of the "Illustrations", singly interleaved, again with pencilled notes on these blanks. The subects include Goethe's Faust - I could have done with these notes when recently reading it through it in the German ("recently" took a year or two).Und alle Deine hohen Werke sind herrlich wie am ersten Tag.

Three volumes. 12vo. pp342, 330, 323. Quarter bound calf with red cloth boards, edges of spine heavily rubbed, so that condition overall is only G-VG. First two volumes bear postage stamp-sized labels with handwritten catalogue numbers. Acquisition number stamped on FEP of volume 1. Date 1861 (ie date of first edition) appears on all three title pages, but Volume 2 must be post-1882, as the list of other works includes novels of that date. Mrs Henry Wood enjoyed a good relationship with Tauchnitz as her European publisher and in 1871 wrote "Mrs. Norton indirectly accuses Baron Tauchnitz, of Leipsic [sic], of taking our works without acknowledgement; of stealing them, in fact, and of 'not venturing to communicate with pirated authors.' I cannot think where Mrs. Norton's experience can have lain; mine shows me that the Baron honestly and liberally purchases all the works of our authors that are worth it."
