This copy contains a manuscript LETTER from John Heath-Stubbs concerning progress on the anthology and the inclusion of a poem by the letter's recipient the late Michael Paffard (b.1928 and latterly a lecturer at Keele, with several books and lots of fine pots to his name) , together with two other MS notes concerning the poem and a poetry reading.The book is in very good condition, the wrapper is yellowed to spine and edges and had classic top-of=wrapper-spine splitting, otherwise complete and VG minus. Other poets include: Dannie Abse, Keith Douglas, Michael Hamburger, Francis King, Kathleen Raine, Muriel Spark, John Wain, Vernon Watkins. All of whom went onto greater things.

Text superimposed on full-page illustrations in coloured crayon or charcoal (apparently). At the beginning , brief notes on place and author ; at the end, the text is summarised in English and German.The binding is white "waxed" cloth, with titling in black. A fine copy in a near-fine wrapper of what was probably a financially-aided, short-run publication.Congratulations to the publisher and printer from another bookseller/publisher, who has never got it QUITE right!

A spectacular copy of this spectacular volume, with its 36 tissue-guarded chromo-lithographs. All edges gilt, navy blue pattern cloth with ornate gilt blcok of Britannia atop her lion, sailor and soldier (but not yet airman). Puce(?)(pale brown-purple) endpapers show where two bookplates have been carefully removed, otherwise the book is very good, almost fine, the spine only being slightly darkened. The spine is dated 1897 at the foot. In original slipcase, worn, the illustrated front-of-box paper darkened but colorful and complete apart from two very small edge losses. The weight would involve extra postage abroad, but we can send to most mainland British addresses free of extra charge. The full price in 1896/7 was seven guineas, the equivalent of around £800 today, though I dare say some were sold more cheaply.

We have an unusual set of 13 Tauchnitz "Collection of British Authors", bound in scrumptious half vellum and cloth, red title labels by Charles Day, 26 Mount Street, London W. for "Fletcher Wastell Hungerford Littledale", or some part of those names, the rest a place and Wastell COULD just be Gastell; all of those names seem to have intermarried.The boards of some volumes are variously heat-warped; the condition is otherwise very good. The price was thirty shillings, so we are charging more or less the same price in real terms (if you can compare). The front board shows creases where it has been bent and re-straightened there is slight fraying to the cloth here and there and one folding plan has a worn edge, but this is essentially a handsome and very good copy, little used, as you don't learn this sort of thing from books. P.S. Hoskinn writes from Cinderford, Dean Forest and W.E.Wells has ink-stamped his name, the date 1871 and a decorative flourish very neatly on the back of the first, frontispiece, plate.

"this enlarged volume", to quote the preface, is the 1848 second edition after the 1845 first. The name of the anonymous authoress we have learned from the British Library Catalogue. This has iv+94pp+2pp publisher's advertisement, all edges gilt. The binding is a very pleasing textured crimson cloth with gilt tile and floral decoarative saga on spine and front board. Both boards have also a blind embossed panel with blind embossed floral motifs in the corners.Appearance very like "A Casquet of Flowers" and other Ladies' Gift Books of this period. Donald Gibson, one of "our binders" (only 24 minutes from Cromford) has done a fine job of relaying the cloth over a new matching spine, hardly noticeable, using good quality pale sage endpapers.I have not counted the real pressed-flower plates so as to disturb as little as possible. One specimen is loose and about one side frond of one plate can be seen by its impression to have been lost. Now presents itself as a fine copy.

A basically very good copy of this mighty volume (folio in size but actually printed in quarto) in original brown cloth with gilt titling and coat of arms on front. There is no splitting of joints or hinges, but a little tattering around the head and foot of the spine, which is moderately faded. One of the most sumptuous of 1970's facsimile reprints. An elephantine folio, bound in Morocco'd drak green cloth, with large antiqued facsimile title on paper. Within, all leaves are mounted on linen hinges in the proper Atlas style, each leaf being printed on the one, opening side only. The first leaf is a double page illustrated title, the second and third leaves carry extensive introductory notes by J.B.Harley and J.C. Harvey, the remianing twenty leaves carry the map, which includes larger scale plans of several towns and cities. This copy has resided in a converted High Peak farmhouse and this has assisted light foxing of endpapers and bottom page edges, with a small thinned bottom corner to the rear free endpaper. There is a half-inch tear in the top edge of the first leaf, which appears as a tiny, diminshing bump in the second and third leaves.The front board is slightly warped, the back board shows two minor bottom-edge bumps. I am trying to describe all faults in what is otherwise a fine copy.
