pp180 + plates. Large quarto. Board cover with ribbon spine (spine torn 3" down edge), showing wear about edges. Title plate in centre of front cover (original price one guinea). 12 plates show the position of the constellations in each month of the year, with a thirteenth plate before them being a diagrammatic representation of the Egyptian, Ptolemaic and Tychonian (ie Copernican) systems. The frontispiece is the first moveable plate, allowing the Earth on one hand to be rotated about the central sun, showing the constellations ("sun signs") behind them, while on a second rotating arm, the procession of Venus and Mars (in a fixed position to each other) can be simulated. The second and third plates show a disk representating the celestial disk at different times to be rotated against a rational horizon. There is a tear in the card representing the "rational horizon" in the last case. Overall the condition of the moveable plates is better than VG. The still plates have stains about the edges. Although Johan Bode had introduced the idea of monthly star charts in the 1760s, it was this work of Rubie's that first popularised the idea: Rubie writing this book as a guide for interested amateurs. Note that Rubie's use of the constellations must be distinguished from R H Naylor's use of "sun signs" when he began his astrological column in the Daily Express a century later, on August 24th, 1930. Rubie's text explains the real and apparent motion of the heavens, and explains how their motion can be calculated and foretold. PO stamp dated 1899 on FEP.

A very lovely, scholarly and intriguing little book. 58 pages, plus two blank leaves at the back, one at the front, a card leaf at back and front, then the endpapers; the whole bound in half vellum (art-vellum?) and maroon close-wove buckram, about 7 inches by 4 in size. I beieve that the titling on the spine is calligraphically hand-lettered. It is a re-edited re-publication of "Xi jgheid il-Malti", presumably entirely in Maltese, by the same author and "practicably unobtainable" at the time of publication of this book, now itself "practically unobtainable" Each story is followed by copious historical and linguitic notes. There is a red smudge on two pages and a tiny blot of resin on the back cover, otherwise a fine copy. I hope we are not being too greedy.Margaret Murray was assistant to Flinders Petrie and herself excavated at many places in the Near East, inluding Malta during 1921-23. She was born in 1863 and still going in 1963, (ref. autobiography "My First Hundred Years"

We've never seen this before either, though we've had her other books. 32pp pocket-book-sized, in stiff card covers, with wrap-overs in the slim-volume style. Cover and contents illustrated with modernist cartoons by the author. A VG- though faded copy. An excerpt: "Clamouring 'quite!' as a chorus, The quorum records its vote, And the Chairman's smile and his store of guile Have preserved an agreeable note, Quite! quite! And a paying idea's afloat." Actually, John Gloag as a bit of a polymath - he wrote detective stories; he published a Penguin Special "What about Business?" during WW2; and he was an expert on English furniture. The title, of course, is a parody of Kipling, (that last line echoes Kipling's "And a rogue is married to a whore")

If my understanding is correct this is volume 1, covering up to 1585 when this Montenegrin became Pope Sixtus V, is the third printing, and Leti's translation of William Sewel's Italian original. As a Cardinal Sixtus was investigating other Catholics for heresy, before going onto excommunicate Henry of Navarre and renew that of Elizabeth I; fortunately, perhaps, for European politics he did not like the Catholic monarchs much more. While he rebuilt much of Rome it was at the cost of the many antique structures which were razed for their stone.

Quarter bound with new spine, with label (new, lifting at bottom R corner) on spine; and original front and back boards (heavily rubbed about edges). New endpapers. Modern book plate inside front cover. "2 vols in one" written above "Vol I." on title page of volume one (difficult to date from script, appears to be pencil). Eccentrically bound pages in Volume 2, but appears to be complete. Relating to volume 2: p22 bound at back though should after p20; 370 and verso 370 should be after 369 but bound at back; 423, 424,426,425, 420, 419, 422,421 all present but bound in wrong order. Some foxing to first and last pages, and pages irregularly cut as common in works of this period, but interior overall is clean, VG. An opportunity to obtain this rare and significant work at a reasonable price. Marshall Hall was born in Nottinghamshire and did some of his most important work at Nottingham General Hospital. He died in Brighton in 1857; it is unclear if he was related to the barrister Edward Marshall Hall who was born in that town in 1858, perhaps as a grandfather.
